EQUSaT Becomes African Hub for VODAN Africa: A Landmark for Equitable Data Governance
Masaka, Uganda - Equator University of Science and Technology (EQUSaT) has been formally approved as the new African home of VODAN Africa, marking a major milestone in the pursuit of equitable data governance and scientific collaboration across the continent.
In a letter dated March 18, 2025, Professor Francisca Oladipo, CEO and Board Secretary of VODAN Africa, submitted a formal request for EQUSaT to host the African office. The appeal highlighted VODAN Africa’s global reach, Afrocentric vision, and commitment to co-owned data systems driven by African leadership and expertise.
Following an in-depth review presented at its 23rd Senate meeting on April 15, 2025, EQUSaT’s governing body unanimously approved the hosting request. The official response, signed by Vice Chancellor Professor M. Mpezamihigo, expressed the university’s enthusiastic support for the partnership and outlined a shared commitment to future collaboration on VODAN Africa’s initiatives.
“This marks a bold step forward in uniting research, innovation, and ethical data stewardship across Africa,” said Prof. Mpezamihigo. “EQUSaT is honored to provide a home where VODAN Africa’s vision can thrive.”
VODAN Africa, part of the broader VODAN initiative, plays a pivotal role in championing Fair, Open, and decentralised data practices that uphold sovereignty, equity, and inclusivity in the digital age.
This momentous partnership unequivocally positions EQUSaT as a key hub in the advancement of cutting-edge Afrocentric data solutions. It is expected to significantly strengthen global collaborations by providing a crucial African perspective on international data dialogues.
More importantly, it empowers African institutions to take a leading role in shaping the very future of data governance, ensuring that the continent's unique needs and vast potential are at the forefront of global digital transformation.
